With this shiny new clean slate, it's time to get rocking on the year ahead. I'm recommending razor-sharp focus. The single most important power move when dealing with money is being CLEAR.
By this, I mean that you are deeply precise and clear about the following:
- What are your goals?
- What do you value?
- The practical steps to get you there.
- Who do you want to be?
Whenever I struggle with a money mindset, it means I have lost connection to one of those four things.
Lost connections amplify noise
When I lose connection to one of those four things, I get unclear and any decisions I attempt to make amplify confusion and indecision. I lose sight of what's important, and money gets overwhelming.
Most of the time, the "amplification of confusion" is very subtle. You will do little things that erode your savings, one tiny transaction at a time. You won't notice it's happening, which makes it so devastating.
You are different
I serve people like you, who are intelligent, confident and have a strong sense of worth. Even if you haven't realised it yet. You are not looking for a "saviour" or someone to do it all for you. You did that, got the T-shirt and aren't going back.
You are looking for a clear path that makes sense with signposts to follow.
Without clarity, you are amplifying the erosion of your financial security and the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are in control of your future.
Eroding your financial security is expensive.
It's also disheartening and overwhelming. Lack of focus puts you in a place of vulnerability and sometimes even a victim mentality.
My take on money is that it always comes back to the clarity of who you are and what you want from life—the sharp focus on what you want and your willingness to make it happen. Your ability to tune out shiny object syndrome, no matter how phenomenally they appear to work for other people - there is no one-size-fits-all or quick wins here.
That's the beauty of personal finance - it's personal.
