Reader,
Burnout is something that is so common in our modern, fast-paced world.
I’ve hit the fabled burnout not once but twice in my career. It’s a tough place to be, and I don’t wish it on anyone. After recovering from the second burnout, I saw a pattern: where there are patterns, there is awareness. Where there is awareness, there is an ability to change. Once I realised this, I promised never to let that situation arise again. It hasn’t and I truly don’t believe it ever will.
What if burnout is not just exhaustion; what if it’s a sign you are doing something that is not a fit for you? Something that, in reality, bores you to tears and drains your battery rather than fills you up?
“It’s not burnout that is the problem, it’s your lukewarm ‘interest’ in your work that is sapping your energy.” - James Cameron
Officially, burnout is mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion. Symptoms like lack of motivation, focus, and passion are correct, but the cause isn’t elusive burnout; it’s a crisis of meaning. Most people loathe their jobs and need more purpose, a topic no one dares discuss.
I wallowed for years in corporate, fearing a failed career-mom stereotype. But when I embraced my true value system it led me to this and success flowed. Obsession is potent, a life force that eradicates burnout. I ask you now to question your source of burnout and from there begin the journey to embracing a mindset that follows. One you genuinely care about.
After conquering burnout, I discovered a simple truth, burnout surfaces when:
Imagine starting a job that never lit you up, only to be in the exact same position both financially and career-wise five years later. Worst still, you’re five years older and not getting any younger.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
- Steve Jobs
Don’t snowflake your way through life; get focused, go all in, and watch the world make more sense.
Make each and every paycheck count - if for a million reasons you can’t pivot right, it is even more important to make each paycheck count by saving and building every single time.
“The best investment you can make is in yourself.”
- Warren Buffett
